Biografie
Griffith nejprve hraje v mnoha Porterových "jednokotoučových" filmech a pak přichází do společnosti Biograph, kde režíruje své první dílo, Dollyina dobrodružství (The Adventures of Dollie, 1908), nové a nepříliš obratné zpracování Psa zachráncem. Při výrobě a režírování stovky kratších filmů Griffith rozvíjí svůj unikátní smysl pro kompozici záběru (Kamera řízená snímanou akcí, a ne naopak. Snímanou scénu rozdělil do více záběrů a přitom zachoval jednotu děje, posílil tak dramatický účinek filmu.) Přeskakování z jednoho děje do druhého ve Spekulantovi s obilím (1909) vedení Biographu nepřijano příliš nadšeně. Rozčarován neochotou Biographu natáčet dlouhometrážní (vícekotoučový) film Griffith studio opouští a přechází do nezávislé kalifornské společnosti Mutual/Reliance-Majestic. Odchází s ním i jeho kameraman G. W. "Billy" Bitzer a celý jeho herecký soubor.
