Narozen jako Robert Haakon Nielsen. Tento americký herec byl prvním představitelem Jamese Bonda. (V televizní adaptaci románu CASINO ROYALE z roku 1954). Hereckou kariéru začínal během studií. Jako patnáctiletý hrál např. i osmdesátiletého starce. Po ukončení univerzity obdržel roku 1941 smlouvu s MGM. A ve stejném roce natáčí dva filmy.
