Hezká a lehce „ujetá“ zpěvačka Penelope (Natalie Wood) se zamiluje do bankéře Jamese Elcotta (Ian Bannen), narychlo se vezmou, brzy přijdou nudné všední dny. Penelope se cítí svým mužem zanedbávána, její dny jsou plné nudy, utrácení peněz a návštěv terapeuta. Frustrovaná Penelope začne krást, zpočátku malé věci, pak větší a jednoho dne přijde na řadu její první „bankovní loupež“ a zrovna v nové bance jejího muže. Přestože vlastně všechno nasvědčuje tomu, že ona je pachatelem a její lékař se domnívá, že to stejně udělala jenom proto, aby na sebe upozornila, odmítá tomu okolní svět uvěřit. Ke všemu je dokonce namísto Penelope zatčena nevinná žena. (MacGuffin)
