Hlavními postavami filmu Krycí jméno U.N.C.L.E., zasazeného do první poloviny šedesátých let minulého století, do doby vrcholící studené války, jsou agent CIA Solo (Cavill) a agent KGB Kuryakin (Hammer). Oba agenti jsou nuceni odložit dlouholeté nepřátelství a spolupracovat na společném úkolu překazit plány tajemné mezinárodní zločinecké organizace, která chce šířením jaderných zbraní a technologií destabilizovat křehkou rovnováhu sil ve světě. Dvojice agentů má k dispozici jediné vodítko – dceru zmizelého německého vědce, která je klíčem k proniknutí do zločinecké organizace.
