Zbytky zničené civilizace již téměř zmizely a poslední přežívající lidé se snaží najít nový model fungující společnosti. Stárnoucí Max se vydává do města Bartertownu, aby získal zpět svůj majetek. Město sice řídí despotická černoška, která si nechá říkat Teta Entita, je však značně závislá na dodavateli elektřiny, který si říká MasterBlaster. Ve skutečnosti jde o nerozlučnou dvojici inteligentního trpaslíka Mastera, který jediný ovládá výrobu elektřiny, a slaboduchého obra Blastera, který svého druha nejen chrání proti všem nebezpečím, ale je také jeho nosičem. Entita po Maxovi chce, aby zabil Blastera v souboji, který občas pořádá v zamřížované aréně, tzv. Kopuli hromu. Maxovi se podaří hloupého obra porazit, odmítne jej však zabít, čímž poruší pravidla hry "dva dovnitř, jeden ven". Za trest je vypovězen z města a spoutaný ponechán v poušti. Zachrání jej dívka Savannah z pouštního kmene dětí, které žijí v malé uzavřené komunitě u pramene vody. Max společně s několika staršími dětmi pronikne do města, osvobodí uvězněného Mastera a pomůže jim uskutečnit jejich sen. (TV Nova)
