Pius XIII. je v kómatu. Po nečekané a záhadné přestávce se Voiellovi podaří dosadit na papežský trůn Sira Johna Brannoxe, umírněného, okouzlujícího a sofistikovaného anglického aristokrata, který přijme jméno Jan Pavel III. Nový papež však pod zdánlivě dokonalou fasádou skrývá mnohé slabiny a tajemství. Záhy si také uvědomí, jak obtížné bude nahradit jeho charismatického a význačného předchůdce. Ve Vatikánu se Voiello mezitím ze všech sil snaží spravovat církev sužovanou nejen skandály – které by mohly všem předním představitelům zlomit vaz – ale i hrozbami zvenčí. Ukáže se, že Sofia a Esther jsou úplně jiné, než by se na první pohled mohlo zdát, a kardinál Gutierrez i nadále bojuje se svými vnitřními rozpory.
