Tento britský herec s ostrými rysy a pronikavým pohledem, zaznamenal svůj jevištní debut v roce 1949 s RSC (Royal Shakespeare Company) a později účinkoval také v divadle Old Vic. Později v průběhu 50. let začal účinkovat také ve filmovén odvětví, konkrétně se nejvíce objevoval ve válečných filmech. Narodil se 9. srpna roku 1927 v Lancashire, později vyrůstal ve Skotsku.
