Něžný milostný příběh, napínavé psychologické drama, inspirativní fyzická a duševní proměna – tím vším film je a navíc i milníkem v kariéře Bette Davis, jíž přinesl už šestou nominaci na Oscara za nejlepší ženský herecký výkon. Kouzelným způsobem tu ztělesňuje Charlotte Valeovou, starou pannu, která se vzepře své dominantní matce (Gladys Cooper, také nominována na Oscara), aby objevila lásku, smutek a nakonec spokojenost.
Ke kouzlu filmu přispívá kromě vynikajícího hereckého obsazení i hudba Maxe Steinera a improvizované gesto Paula Henreida, které se stalo klasikou: v jednom okamžiku si zapaluje dvě cigarety najednou a jednu předává Davisové. Pokud jde o romantické melodrama, je tento snímek rozhodně jedním z nejlepších, vždycky byl a vždycky bude.
