Emmanuel Lubezki

[on managing Sandra Bullock's physical performance in Gravitace (2013)] "We literally had puppeteers controlling her. I couldn't stand being in the rig for more than thirty seconds, and she would be up there for hours. Sandra is an athlete, an acrobat, a ballerina and a total Buddhist."

Hoyte van Hoytema

[on Dunkirk (2017)] We played around with the IMAX cameras a lot with Interstellar (2014) as well, and it's undeniably the best and most visceral format. It's the biggest negative, so it will harvest light and spread it out over the biggest amount of celluloid, which ultimately gives it the highest resolution - but also, with the experience of depth and color rendition, there's nothing like it right now.

Sadly, some people think of good cinematography as a beautiful sunset or a spectacular vista. I believe we affect the audience in a much more subtle way. We're manipulating them emotionally with light, darkness, colors, contrast and composition. I know the Dogme 95 theories, but I believe actors respond to light. Just look at a Rembrandt or Caraveggio painting or any of the Dutch masters, and tell me light isn't important. The pictures have to be true to the narrative, but I like to test the boundaries and see how far I can go.

Anthony Dod Mantle

I grew up in England and was fortunate to have very understanding, tolerant parents. Mum was a painter and my dad worked in agriculture. I did my A-levels and then started to travel and they never hurried or hassled me. I was always very inquisitive growing up, but I couldn't just find my vocation and unlike some parents who push their kids, which I won't ever do with mine, they gave me the space to continue the search. I spent a year in India at the age of 24 to find out what my vocation would be. I took thousands of photographs and I learned for the first time that one image can mean a thousand and one different things to people. I found that fascinating and it was the start of something.
