Dean Corso je expert na staré bibliofilie, specializuje se na zjišťování pravosti a oceňování hodnoty starých knih pro významné sběratele. Je najat bohatým podivínem Borisem Balkanem, aby si prohlédl a prověřil kopii knihy "Devět bran do Království Stínů" jejímž autorem je sám Satan. Má to být jedna ze tří existujících kopií, z nichž pouze jedna je ta pravá a tu je třeba označit. Balkan posílá Corsa do Evropy, aby tam vyhledal zbylé dva tisky a porovnal je s už dostupným originálem. Ten brzy přijde na to, že kniha, kterou vlastní Balkan je ze sbírky Andrewa Telfera, který se za záhadných okolností oběsil. Na cestě plné tajemných i erotických kontaktů a záhad se Corso střetne s vdovou po Telferovi a také s bezejmennou, krásnou francouzskou dívkou, svým andělem strážným... (Magic Box)
