Život je krásný (1997)

I can see how some people might not experience the same kind of uplift or joy that most of us lived through when seeing the movie. But that some viewers felt insulted and betrayed because the movie did not depict "reality" as it really was or is, is not fair but It provided me with something that everyone in one or another shape or form needs -- Hope. The movie showed the cruelty of life and yet managed to shed some light and insight into the beauty of love and life in general. If we all take with us just little bit of that hope and love that this movie is trying to convey; this world would be a much better place.

La Source des femmes (2011)

In a remote and primitive patriarchal village between the North of Africa and the Middle East, the land has dried and the women traditionally brings water from a distant fountain to their houses while the idle husbands drink tea in the bar. The educated Leïla (Leila Bekhti), who is the wife of the local teacher Sami (Saleh Bakri), begins a love strike movement among the women, supported by the elderly female, to force the men to bring water to the village. There is a strong reaction from the brutal men, It is about a group of courageous women who are about to challenge the status quo of their village, the story is a combination of drama and comedy in precise doses to make the viewer think, and exposes the situation of women not only in some Muslim countries but also in poor worldwide areas where ignorance still prevails.

Highway (2014)

It was very good. I loved how they India depicted in this movie through the highways , from cities, to salty barren lands, deserts, plains of Punjab and eventually majestic Himalayas. I liked it especially because I could relate with main character . Even I've desires to live near nature and to be free from the bounds of busy city life. Performances were very good too especially Randeep Hooda who gave a subtle performance and emoted through his eyes which is definitely one of best qualities in an actor. Alia Bhatt has significantly improved as an actress.

The Promise (2011) (seriál)

Very good, finally a fairly balanced attempt at depicting the Israel-Palestine problem. I very much appreciated the fact that the movie tried to remain rather unbiased - some scenes seemed anti-jewish though ( where it went a little over the top with showing the brutality of the IDF and excessively victimizing the Palestinians). The two story lines make it possible to show at the same time both the current situation as well as the original creation of the problem, its roots. Great idea! Most will learn a lot by watching it, and it will make many think again about the preconceptions they have about this issue, mostly due to ignorance and misinformation in the media. I especially like the filmic locations which were shot directly in Israel.

Pozemšťané (2005)

Earthlings expose the atrocities committed against animals, that if viewed in human terms would amount to the most evil crimes against humanity, and should (I hope someday will) be considered as such. It is an important and informative film, fueled by horrific images captured through an unflinching camera lens. The nightmarish images, which to my mind resemble a reasonable facsimile of Hell itself, with the innocent being tortured by their evil overlords, are more than enough. Evil is not the only word that comes to mind when you hear what the workers and trainers say to their sorry subjects as they inflict their torture. But I do not hate the evil men, I somehow pity them, both for the lives they lead and their loss of something I deeply value - empathy and compassion. Prepare to be shocked and repulsed. I realize in giving that warning, people will want to avoid this film. The truth is horrible and we have been living in lies if we pretend that we are not accountable for the cruelty inflicted on these beings on our behalf. Haven't seen a more harrowing documentary. This actually goes on to prove that humans are the most cruel of all animals on this planet. The documentary talks about animals in five different parts. They are shown as pets, as a source of food, entertainment, clothes and experimental subjects. The tortures which the animals are subjected to and the different manners of killing them are shown in their full brutality. Just closing our eyes and thinking that the animals are treated humanely before they are dispatched to the other world is naive. watch this and prepare to be blown literally. The film makes a strong argument for some form of compromise on the meat eater/vegetarian debate, but it also delves into the issue of fur trading, animals as a form of entertainment (i.e zoos), and as test subjects in the name of science. The footage in each segment is nothing short of incredible and is surely the result of years of effort, It was to simply inform as how humanity perceives other beings that live on this planet, Joaquin Phoenix does a wonderful job narrating, and brings a solemn tone to the film.

Queen (2013)

Queen of Hearts!! - One of my favourite Indian movies to come out in 2014 so far. Distant cousin of "English Vinglish" with a loveable character so naturally and effortlessly performed by talented actress Kangana ranaut - It was quite amazing to see Kangana who performed Fashionista model in her award winning role in "Fashion" to a stark contrast of simple minded small town Indian girl in "Queen". It was quite an experience for me because I've met many "Rani's" in real life... Hope they will see this movie to get a little inspiration of Feminism.

Nikdo to neví (2004)

What if I was a 12 years old boy and left alone to take care of two younger sisters and one younger brother in a big city like Tokyo, and I have to hide them in the apartment so nobody knows about them? That's what I have been thinking when I was watching this film and how the film gets my sympathy for these children. It allows me to experience the ordeal through these children's eyes and the transcending performance by Yuya Yagira, who is the youngest actor ever won the best actor award in the history of Cannes Film Festival and can teach a thing or two to those successful hollywood actors. Director Koreeda allows the camera to take the time to shoot and he never rushes from one scene to the next. He let me observe, let me feel, let me be as close to these children as I possibly can, until I can no longer take it and until I am drowned by the frustration and sadness. I become as helpless as those children, because I simply can not resist the urge to help them. That makes me cry. It is probably the saddest movie I've seen since "Grave of the fireflies". This movie is based on the actual incident happened in 1988. It was much more miserable than the movie. A woman was living with a man. She thought he had filed the marriage notification. When their son was born, the man said he had filed the birth notification. One day he left her to live with another woman. When the boy reached the primary school age, she knew neither the marriage notification nor the birth notification was filed. Facing this situation, she decided to hide her children from the society. She had met several men and had 5 children, two boys and three girls, all having different fathers, who were not registered and hidden from other people.

Pouta války (2004)

Another good movie after "Joint Security Area" which depicts the fallback of Korean war. But this movie was raw and realistic in its approach, sometimes very hard to watch.

Požáry (2010)

4.5 for me. Twins journey to the Middle East to discover their family history, and fulfill their mother's last wishes. Great film about the Middle east conflict. Incendies is the kind of film that one walks away from feeling emotionally drained. You know, sometimes it's better not to know everything.
