Po dosiahnutí veku trinásť rokov nastáva pre deti zásadný zlom, pretože sa začína bezstarostný život tínedžerov, ktorý mnohí ľudia nazývajú najkrajším obdobím života. Pre Maddie však znamenal vek 13 rokov úplne niečo iné. Prestala rozprávať a ohluchla. V dospelosti je pre takýchto ľudí veľmi ťažké nájsť zamestnanie, takže sa Maddie uchýlila na samotu a stala sa spisovateľkou. V blízkosti žijú jej priatelia John a Sarah, ktorí sa s ňou občas stretávajú. Po jednom obyčajnom stretnutí so Sarah sa však pred jej dverami objaví neočakávaný hosť. Neznámy muž s maskou na tvári a kušou v ruke sa snaží dostať do jej domu, pričom je jasné, že sa nejedná o žiadnu priateľskú návštevu. (Marceloo)
