V roce 1955 dr. Emmet Brown právě odeslal do budoucnosti Martyho McFlye. Jenže v tentýž okamžik mu poklepe na rameno Marty, který se vrátil pro almanach sportovních výsledků a uvízl v minulosti poté, co úder blesku odeslal stroj času i s dr. Brownem do roku 1885. Podle dopisu, který Marty od Browna dostal, byl stroj času poškozen a v roce 1885 neexistuje možnost jeho opravy, proto ho ukryl v jeskyni, kde by ho Marty měl najít. Vzápětí Marty zjistí, že Doc byl několik dnů po napsání dopisu zastřelen zezadu jakýmsi Bufordem Tannenem. Pustí se do opravy auta, aby se Marty mohl vydat Brownovi na pomoc, a zanedlouho už startuje na cestu do roku 1885. Tady se hned připlete do cesty indiánům, což má za následek palivovou nádrž prostřelenou šípem. Ujme se ho rodina Seamuse McFlye. Marty se jim představí jako Clint Eastwood a začne v městečku pátrat po Brownovi. Místo toho však narazí na Bufordův gang a málem na to doplatí životem. Naštěstí včas zasáhne Brown. Společně pak začnou plánovat návrat do budoucnosti, přičemž musí vyřešit problém s benzínem. Při přípravách se Brown seznámí s novou učitelkou Clarou Claytonovou a okamžitě se do ní zamiluje. Žena, která je nadšenou čtenářkou románů Julese Vernea, jeho city opětuje, a tak vědec dokonce začne uvažovat o tom, že v minulosti zůstane. Martymu se podaří zmařit Bufordův pokus o Brownovu vraždu. Jenže situace se dál komplikuje. (TV Nova)
