Na sklonku 16. století proti sobě v Británii stanuly dvě velké ženy, Alžběta I. a Marie Stuartovna. Jejich střet nemohl dopadnout jinak… Soudobí básnící opěvovali její krásu a celá katolická Evropa do ní vkládala naděje, že vrátí na starý kontinent vládu konzervativní víry. Skotskou královnou se po smrti svého otce Jakuba V. stala již v prvním roce svého života. V patnácti letech se díky sňatku s dauphinem Františkem stala královnou Francie. A jen zanedlouho poté získala protivnici na život a na smrt. Ačkoli Marie Stuartovna o anglický trůn v reálných dějinách neusilovala, přestože byla pravnučkou krále Jindřicha VII. Tudora, zpochybnila volbu královny Alžběty I., která jí tento čin nikdy nezapomněla. A když později Marie Stuartovna musela uprchnout ze Skotska a žádat svou příbuznou Alžbětu o pomoc, brzy poznala, že paměť monarchů je skutečně dlouhá. Vynikající historické drama, popisující střet dvou velkých osobností britských dějin a nominované na pět Oscarů, natočil v roce 1971 režisér Charles Jarrott. Hlavní role dvou nesmiřitelných žen ztvárnily hvězdy první velikosti Vanessa Redgraveová a Glenda Jacksonová. (Česká televize)
