Před mnoha tisíci lety představovala Atlantida vyspělou civilizaci na vrcholu rozkvětu. Když se však král snažil využít síly říše k ovládnutí světa, došlo k obrovské katastrofě a Altantida nenávratně zmizela V roce 1914 sní kartograf a lingvista Milo Thatch v kotelně muzea svůj sen o objevení Atlantidy. Pokusy o její nalezení učinil kdysi jeho dědeček. Ten odhalil tajemství deníku, který popisuje cestu do Atlantidy. Když se Milo opět pokouší přesvědčit nabubřelou komisi o vypravení expedice, je s posměchem vyhozen z muzea. V tom se objevuje výstřední miliardář Preston Whitmore, dávný přítel Milova dědečka, který se rozhodne završit sen Tadeáše Thatche. Vyhledá jeho vnuka, odevzdá mu onu záhadnou knihu a dokonce financuje výpravu za nalezením Atlantidy. Cesta postupuje velmi nadějně, protože Milo jako jediný umí rozluštit dávnou řeč Atlantiďanů. Ovšem postupně se začíná ukazovat, že podivná posádka pod velením kapitána Rourka, není vedena jen vědeckými zájmy. Po střetnutí s mořskou obludou a řadě dalších podmořských dobrodružství se skupina skutečně dostává do Atlantidy. To, co zde naleznou, je však více než překvapivé. Atlantida žije!
