Posádka cestujúca naprieč vesmírom objaví stratenú loď blízko čiernej diery. Lodi velí doktor Hans Reinhardt (Maximilian Schell). Počas stretnutia s Reinhardtom astronauti zistia, že je šialený a myslí si, že práve oni mu bránia v jeho úsilí cestovať cez neďalekú čiernu dieru, priepasť, z ktorej nikto nemôže uniknúť. Vyhliadky na ich prežitie sa zhoršia, keď zistia, že Reinhardt drží v zajatí bývalé členky a bývalých členov posádky lode po tom, čo si uvedomil, že mu môžu pomôcť dosiahnuť svoj cieľ. Posádka musí nájsť spôsob, ako utiecť z lode, než bude príliš neskoro... (fefee)
