Snímek je adaptací stejnojmenného autobiografického románu Franka McCourtha, v němž vzpomíná na své nelehké dětství, které strávil v chudinské čtvrti irského města Limerick. Vydání románu provázel v USA menší skandál, neboť autorova rodina se od něj distancovala a zpochybňovala pravdivost vzpomínek F. McCourtha. Film samotný poměrně věrně kopíruje dějovou linii knihy, avšak místy vyznívá poněkud chladněji. Děj se převážně odehrává v Limericku, kde Frank vyrůstá se svou matkou Andělou a otcem Malachym, jenž svým sklonem k alkoholismu ožebračuje celou rodinu. Frank ztratí hned několik sourozenců ze své početné rodiny a jediné východisko postupně spatřuje v odchodu do Ameriky. Matka Anděla trpně snáší osud a pro své potomky je ochotná udělat téměř cokoliv, co by bylo v jejich silách. Snímek zaujme svým naturalistickým zachycením dobového života v chudém a deštivém Limericku. Film získal cenu diváků na 35. MFF v Karlových Varech 2000. (oficiální text distributora)
