U malého ostrůvku ztroskotá loď poté, co najede na mělčinu. Zdá se, že bójky vyznačující bezpečný průplav někdo úmyslně posunul. Jen jediný člověk přežije potopení lodi i následné řádění žraloků – dobrodruh Robert Rainsford (Joel McCrea). Na ostrově Bob objevuje starou pevnost obývanou ruským podivínem hrabětem Zaroffem (Leslie Banks) a jeho ještě podivnějšími nemluvnými sluhy. Zdá se, že Bobova loď nebyla první, která se v těchto místech v poslední době potopila. Bob se tak v domě setkává se sourozenci Evou a Martinem Trowbridgeovými, také ztroskotanci. Ve vhodné chvíli Eva Robertovi svěří své obavy z nepochopitelného chování jejich hostitele. Té noci Martin Trowbridge záhadně zmizí. Lov na lidi může začít. (dopitak)
