Milostný příběh je volnou biografií dánské spisovatelky Karen Blixenové a zachycuje její dlouholetý pobyt v africké Keni. Karen v Dánsku řekne bratrovi svého milence, baronu Broru Blixenovi, že se za něj provdá a dá mu peníze, aby koupil farmu v Africe. Roku 1913 Karen přijíždí do Keni a ve vlaku se poprvé setká s lovcem Denysem Finchem Hattonem. Už v den svatebního obřadu přichází první rozčarování. Bror bez rozloučení odjede na dlouhý lov, a navíc Karen zjistí, že manžel její peníze nepoužil na zřízení chovu krav, ale rozhodl se pěstovat kávu. Karen se seznamuje s prostředím, komunitou bělochů i domorodými vesničany. Při jedné z vyjížděk se opět setká s Denysem, který zasáhne, když je v pustině překvapena lvicí. Krátce nato se Karen od lékaře dozví, že ji manžel nakazil syfilidou. Její stav je natolik vážný, že se musí léčit v Evropě. Do Afriky se vrací až po válce. Keňa Karen stále víc fascinuje. V buši se probouzí její senzitivní duše, která čím dál víc trpí po manželově boku. Není divu, že se zamiluje do nezávislého a svobodomyslného Denyse, se kterým prožije nejkrásnější chvíle svého života. Krátké období štěstí je však vykoupeno tragédií... (TV Nova)
