Zlaté období italské renesance zachycené ve střetu titánů své doby – umělce Michelangela Buonarrotiho a papeže Julia II... Počátkem 16. století proslul během svého pontifikátu „papež válečník“ Julius II. (R. Harrison) zejména svou výbojnou politikou za účelem posílení pozice Papežského státu. Také však i jako mecenáš umění, který po sobě hodlal zanechat dílo velebící slávu Boha. K tomu mu měl posloužit geniální, ale vzpurný sochař Michelangelo Buonarroti, jemuž papež nařídil, aby se postaral o výmalbu stropu Sixtinské kaple. Umělec excelující zejména jako sochař sice zakázku přijal a na freskách začal pracovat roku 1508, ale často se vůli papeže vzpouzel. To vyústilo v několikaletý spor dvou neústupných osobností… Historický snímek Carola Reeda nominovaný na pět Oscarů a natočený podle předlohy Irvinga Stonea "Agónie a extáze" nabídl vedle impozantní výpravy hlavně herecký koncert Charltona Hestona a Rexe Harrisona v úlohách zcela rozdílných individualit, jejichž náhled na svět se často různil. Jako poctu velkému sochaři, architektovi, malíři a básníkovi Michelangelovi také tvůrci natočili krátký prolog o jeho díle, který předchází vlastnímu filmovému příběhu. (Česká televize)
