Svět budoucnosti se změnil. Ledovce roztály, miliony lidí přišly o půdu pod nohama a jejich životní prostor se radikálně zmenšil. Situace si vyžádala absolutní kontrolu nad růstem populace. Chybějící místo zaplnili roboti. Jsou lidem k nerozeznání podobní a rok od roku jsou dokonalejší. Ten poslední, kterého sestrojil profesor Hobby, je tak dokonalý, že je schopen milovat, snít a cítit stejně jako člověk. Má podobu jedenáctiletého chlapce, jmenuje se David a společnost ho předala manželům Henrymu a Monice Swintonovým. Jejich syn Martin leží v nemocnici, kde v umělém spánku čeká, zda bude objeven lék na jeho smrtelnou nemoc. Manželé mají Davida vyzkoušet, a pokud se rozhodnou, mohou aktivovat jeho emoce. Profesor však manžele varuje, že si to mají dobře rozmyslet, protože je to krok nevratný. Žena to přesto po čase udělá a chlapec k ní začne cítit lásku. Dostane plyšového medvídka Tedyho, který patřil Martinovi. Stane se však to, co nikdo nečekal a Martin se uzdraví. Velmi záhy se ukáže, že pro dva chlapce není v rodině místo a Monica malého, vroucně milujícího robota odveze do lesa daleko za město, kde ho vysadí a odjede. Šokovaný David se rozhodne najít pohádkovou vílu Modrovlásku, která dokázala proměnit dřevěného Pinocchia v opravdového chlapce. Doufá, že jako skutečný chlapec se bude moci vrátit k mamince...
