Byla jednou pěkná banka a několik zločinců, kteří ji chtěli vyloupit... Lupič Dee Bishop a jeho banda se pokusí vykrást banku v městečku Val Verde. Šerif Johnson však muže zajme a soudce je za jejich zločin odsoudí k smrti. Když se v blízkém San Antoniu o chystané popravě dozví Mace Bishop, rozhodne se mladšího bratra zachránit za každou cenu. Na cestě do Val Verde si proto počká na kata, jenž má vykonat rozsudek. Právě od něj si „vypůjčí” šaty a v přestrojení pak odsouzencům pomůže utéct přímo zpod šibenice. Jako rukojmí si s sebou Dee Bishop vezme krásnou Marii Stonerovou, do níž je zamilován stárnoucí šerif July Johnson. Bude to on, kdo povede trestnou výpravu za uprchlíky, kteří mají namířeno na území texasko-mexických hranic, kde neomezeně vládnou tlupy banditů, tzv. bandoleros... Slavný western natočil klasik amerického filmu Andrew V. McLaglen (Shenandoah). Působivost příběhu stojí na hereckých výkonech hlavních představitelů: James Stewart v roli Mace Bishopa, Dean Martin jako jeho povedený bratříček Dee, Raquel Welchová v úloze Stonerové a George Kennedy v postavě stárnoucího a tvrdohlavého šerifa Johnsona.
