Láska, chamtivost, nenávist a Joan Crawfordová v hlavních rolích klasického amerického westernu. Americký western Johnny Guitar, natočený podle stejnojmenného románu Roye Chanslora z roku 1953, byl v době své premiéry v červnu 1954 jednoznačně odmítnut odbornou kritikou i diváckou veřejností. Prvním, kdo se filmu zastal a rozpoznal jeho kvality, byl francouzský kritik (a později slavný režisér) Francois Truffaut, který ve své dobové recenzi mj. napsal, že mu snímek připomíná Krásku a Zvíře s tím, že Kráskou je tu Sterling Hayden (představitel titulní postavy) a Zvířetem Joan Crawfordová, která s gustem ztělesnila majitelku saloonu Viennu. Dnes je Johnny Guitar právem pokládán za klasické dílo padesátých let, které svým příběhem i zpracováním předběhlo dobu. Příběh tvrdé Vienny a její bývalé lásky, pistolníka Johnnyho Logana, který si teď říká Johnny Guitar, se sice odehrává ve westernových reáliích (natáčelo se v okolí arizonského městečka Sedona s proslulými červenými skalními útvary), ale svým laděním spíš inklinuje k tehdy populárnímu filmu noir. Příběh snímku není ani tak příběhem jeho titulního hrdiny, který je tu v podstatě vedlejší postavou, jako příběhem dvou navzájem se nenávidějících žen – Vienny a zběsilé rančerky Emmy (vynikající Mercedes McCambridgeová), která svoji sokyni chce za každou cenu zlikvidovat. Právě obě ženy jsou nositelkami výbušné agresivity, která v tomto žánru jinak výhradně náleží mužům, a skutečná nevraživost obou hlavních představitelek značnou měrou přispěla k přesvědčivosti jejich postav.
Film, jehož děj dopředu posunují emoce a nikoli akce, bývá také považován za skrytou alegorii mccarthyismu (scenárista Philip Yordan byl známý tím, že svým jménem zaštiťoval práce kolegů, kteří byli na černé listině). Snímek překvapuje nezastřenou sexuální symbolikou (v dobovém hollywoodském kontextu naprosto výjimečnou), vizuální krásou (kamera Harryho Stradlinga) a působivým hudebním doprovodem Victora Younga. Režisér Nicholas Ray (1911–1979) je u nás známý především úspěšným dramatickým portrétem odcizeného mládí Rebel bez příčiny (1955) s Jamesem Deanem. Na sklonku svého života se objevil jako herec v úloze ukřičeného plukovníka ve Formanových Vlasech (1979) a spolu s Wimem Wendersem se podílel na dokumentu o svém životě a smrti, nazvaném Blesky nad vodou (1980). Některé motivy filmu (hlavní hrdina s hudebním nástrojem, ekonomické důsledky postupující železnice či postava tvrdé, soběstačné ženy) si „vypůjčil“ Sergio Leone do svého klasického díla Tenkrát na Západě (1968).
