Jeremiáše Johnsona civilizace neláká. Zahořklý civilizačními neduhy a válkami se v polovině 19. století rozhodne pro zálesácký život, stane se horalem, vyhledávajícím samotu v nedotčené divočině, jejíž neposkvrněnost nikdy nezpochybňoval. První zima prožitá ve Skalistých horách však Jeremiáše málem sklátí. Vyhladovělý a napůl zmrzlý nachází útočiště u starého prohnaného trapera, který jej učí nejrůznějším způsobům přežití, včetně přímého souboje s grizzlym. Jeremiáš je dobrým žákem, a tak když se opět vydává za svým cílem, lze říci, že z někdejšího zelenáče je ošlehaný muž, kterého drsností může předčit jenom velkolepá a hrůzu nahánějící příroda.
