Dvaačtyřicetiletý novinář Richard Boyle informuje v roce 1980 o občanské válce v malé středoamerické zemi El Salvador. Vláda prezidenta Duarta bojuje za podpory USA proti levicové revoluční Frontě národního osvobození Farabunda Martího. Její stoupenci jsou likvidováni eskadrami smrti, řízenými armádou. Richard Boyle prožívá boje z bezprostřední blízkosti a stává se dokonce svědkem zavraždění arcibiskupa Romera. Po těchto zkušenostech se rozhodne uprchnout se svou přítelkyní Marií do Kalifornie.
