Na Jamese Bonda je i černá magie krátká. Roger Moore v hlavní roli britského akčního filmu. Krátce za sebou jsou během výkonu služby zabiti tři agenti britské tajné služby: jeden během jednání OSN, další v New Orleansu a poslední na karibském ostrově San Monique. Agent 007 James Bond se proto vydá do New Yorku a spojí se s věrným kolegou ze CIA Felixem Leiterem. Brzy však padne do pasti harlemského drogového mafiána, jenž si říká Mr. Big a jenž má k ruce několik všeho schopných zabijáků. Bondovi se podaří utéct a přes New Orleans vypátrat hlavního podezřelého: tím není nikdo jiný než premiér republiky San Monique Kananga. On a Mr. Big jsou ve skutečnosti jedna a tatáž osoba, která má velmi odvážný zločinný plán: na ostrově řídí velkovýrobu heroinu, kterým hodlá zaplavit světový drogový trh. Proti Jamesi Bondovi má soukromou armádu, temná kouzla vúdú a krásnou pannu Solitaire s věšteckými schopnostmi... Film Žít a zemřít znamenal začátek bondovské kariéry pro třetího představitele agenta 007 Rogera Moorea, který se v postavě Jamese Bonda objevil celkem sedmkrát. „Výbušná" titulní píseň Paula a Lindy McCartneyových byla nominována na Oscara.
