Při psaní reportáže o okresu Levy na Floridě v roce 1982 jeden novinář odhalil šokující tragédii. Pro obyvatele vesničky Rosewood, založené na hodnotách rodiny, víry a tvrdé práce náhle končí veškeré naděje. Během několika nočních nájezdů srovná jejich vesnici se zemí skupina pomstychtivců. V okamžiku největšího běsnění spojí své síly veterán z 1. světové války a místní obchodník, aby odvrátili blížící se smrt. V bažinách se totiž skrývají desítky žen a dětí, které v hrůze uprchly.
