Epická adaptace románového bestselleru Margaret Mitchellové Jih proti Severu (1939) patří dodneška k nejoblíbenějším filmům víc než stoleté historie pohyblivých obrázků, a určitě plným právem. Mitchellová (1900–1949) byla vystudovanou novinářkou a "Jih proti Severu" začala psát v roce 1926, kdy utrpěla při jízdě na koni vážný úraz, který zanechal trvalé následky. Materiál pro svoji knihu získala ze vzpomínek svých příbuzných, zejména od otce, který byl jeden čas předsedou Atlantské historické společnosti. Původně nezamýšlela své dílo zveřejnit, ale naštěstí k tomu došlo v roce 1936. Kniha se stala nesmírně populární (dodnes prodala více výtisků pouze Bible), a navíc byla vyznamenána prestižní Pulitzerovou cenou. Nezávislý producent David O. Selznick zakoupil filmová práva měsíc po publikaci za tehdy neslýchaných 50 000 dolarů, což byla v té době nejvyšší cena, zaplacená za románovou prvotinu. Jeho investice se mu bohatě vrátila. Natáčení bylo zahájeno na sklonku roku 1938 rozsáhlou scénou požáru Atlanty, založeného ustupujícími jižanskými vojáky, aby konfederační muniční sklady nepadly do rukou Unie. Bylo při ní použito všech sedm technicolorových kamer, jež tehdy v Hollywoodu existovaly. V té době také Selznick neměl ještě obsazenu klíčovou postavu Scarlett O’Harové. Natočil kamerové zkoušky s více než 400 adeptkami a nakonec si vybral Angličanku Vivien Leighovou, což značně popudilo jižanské příznivce románu. O tom, že Rhetta Butlera bude hrát Clark Gable celkem nikdo dopředu nepochyboval. Selznick si jeho služby zajistil u společnosti MGM příslibem distribučních práv... Snímek vznikl s tehdy nebývalým rozpočtem 3,9 milionu dolarů a stal se událostí roku. Při udílení cen Akademie 29. února 1940 si odnesl osm Oscarů (tehdejší rekord) – nejlepší film, režie, scénář podle předlohy, ženský herecký výkon v hlavní roli (Vivien Leighová), ženský herecký výkon ve vedlejší roli (Hattie McDanielová za úlohu chůvy), výprava, kamera a střih. Kromě toho při oscarovém ceremoniálu obdržel výtvarník William Cameron Menzies zvláštní cenu (ve formě plakety nikoli sošky!) za „vynikající použití barvy pro zvýšení dramatického účinku filmu“ a producent David O. Selznick Pamětní cenu Irvinga G. Thalberga, udílenou za „trvale vysokou úroveň produkce“. To často vede k mylným tvrzením, že Jih proti Severu dostal deset Oscarů. Afroamerická herečka Hattie McDanielová se stala nejen první barevnou držitelkou Oscara mezi herci, ale i první nominovanou černoškou v některé z hereckých kategorií. Nicméně slavnostní premiéry filmu, která se konala 15. prosince 1939 v Atlantě, se kvůli své barvě pleti nemohla zúčastnit. Na premiéře se naopak objevila autorka Margaret Mitchellová, i když se na filmové verzi nijak nepodílela (ač ji o to Selznick několikrát žádal). Jako režisér je pod filmem podepsán Victor Fleming, ale na režisérské stoličce se vystřídalo víc tvůrců, mj. George Cukor a Sam Wood. Ani scenárista Sidney Howard nebyl jediným, kdo se na adaptaci tisícistránkové knihy podílel, mezi dalšími anonymními autory figurují prominentní jména jako Ben Hecht, John Van Druten a Jo Swerling. Konečné slovo ve všech aspektech filmu měl však Selznick, který byl skutečným hnacím motorem díla i jeho hlavním tvůrcem. I když se o to v následujících letech několikrát snažil, dokonalosti Jihu proti Severu se mu už dosáhnout nepodařilo. (Česká televize)
