Ben Matlock (Andy Griffith) je sympatický postarší právník z Atlanty. Pracuje jako obhájce a za svůj případ si účtuje horentní sumu 100.000 Dolarů. Najmout si jej se ale vyplatí. Svým klientům pomáhá z nesnází. Díky svému nasazení a osobnímu zaujetí každým případem se mu velmi často daří očistit jméno nevinným lidem, kteří byli obviněni z vraždy. . Při jeho pátrání mu pomáhají mladí soukromí detektivové Tyler Hudson a jeho dcera Charlene, která původně vystudovala právo na prestižní Harvardské univerzitě, podobně jako její otec. V soukromí je obyčejným, dobrosrdečným chlapíkem s lidskými slabostmi (je milovníkem hot dogů). U soudu nasazuje svůj šarm a jeho instinkt mu pomáhá přijít na kloub i velmi složitým případům, nakonec vždy nalezne a předvede porotě logické důkazy, které usvědčí pravého pachatele. Seriál se natáčel devět let a získal velkou popularitu, nejen díky sympatickému hlavnímu představiteli, ale také zobrazením prostředí americké justice. (TV Barrandov)
