Obyčejný muž uprostřed neúprosného kola dějin... Válečné drama je jakousi odyseou prostého rumunského rolníka Johanna Moritze, který touží jen po tom, aby mohl poklidně žít se svou krásnou ženou a dětmi. Na udání místního úředníka, kterému se až příliš líbí jeho manželka, je odvlečen do koncentračního tábora. Marně píše odvolání a posílá dopisy své ženě. Komise pro rasovou čistotu u něj zjistí germánské rysy a Moritz se zcela paradoxně dostává do oddílu SS. Nosí jejich uniformu a jeho fotografie se ocitne na titulních stranách předních nacistických novin. Přežije, ale tím jeho cesta, kterou vytýčila kola velkých dějin, nekončí... Film natočil známý francouzský režisér Henri Verneuil, který do role vedoucího pracovního tábora obsadil Jana Wericha! Mnozí diváci si jistě povšimnou s jakou producentskou velkorysostí byl film natočen, davové scény z pracovního a koncentračního tábora, obsazení komparsisty, koňmi a dekoracemi v rozlehlých filmových obrazech točených pro velké plátno jsou obdivuhodné.
