Se snem o lepším životě se mladý lékař Louis Creed se svou rodinou – manželkou Rachel, dcerou Ellie a tříletým synkem Gagem – přestěhují do nového domova ve venkovské městečku Ludlow ve státě Maine, znepokojivě blízko rušné dálnice. Když Rachel přijde při nehodě o milovaného kocoura, zoufalý Louis neochotně poslechne radu svého přátelského souseda, aby kocoura pohřbil na starém mikmackém hřbitově – tajemném pohřebišti s oživující mocí. Navzdory hrozným výsledkům a neustálým varováním od nedávno zesnulých se Louis zasažený tragédií musí na indiánský hřbitov vrátit a doufá, že tentokrát to bude jiné.
