Jak se irský mladík bez budoucnosti stane součástí anglické šlechty 18. století? Odpověď Barryho Lyndona (Ryan O’Neil) je stručná: jakýmkoli možným způsobem! Barry je snaživý žadatel o ruku, účastník soubojů, pobuda, voják v Sedmileté válce, flamendr, špión i falešný karetní hráč – to jsou jeho zastávky na cestě nahoru za bohatstvím a postavením v této přepychové filmové verzi románu Williama Makepeace Thackeryho natočené Stanleym Kubrickem. Pro zvládnutí tohoto nádherně vystavěného a úskočně satirického filmu se Kubrick nechal inspirovat díly malířů té doby. Kostýmy i scény byly pečlivě vyrobeny v dobovém stylu a pro natáčení interiérů i exteriérů v přirozeném světle byly vyvinuty novátorské čočky. A výsledek? Barry Lyndon přetrvává jako zlomový film, který přenáší historické období na filmové plátno tak živě, jako žádný jiný film před ním ani po něm. (Magic Box)
