Píše se rok 1937. Obchodník John Rabe žije již téměř 30 let se svou ženou Dorou v Nankingu, hlavním městě Číny, kde vede pobočku společnosti Siemens. Jen s těžkým srdcem se chystá předat vedení do rukou svého nástupce a ještě hůře se bude z milovaného místa vracet do Berlína. Během rozlučkové oslavy konané na jeho počest se ale na Nanking sesypou bomby z japonských letadel. Rabe v nastalé panice nechává otevřít brány společnosti a nabízí úkryt rodinám svých zaměstnanců. Přestože je jako německý občan spíše spojencem Japonců, neváhá, ruší svůj odlet do Německa a pouští se do jedné z největších záchranných akcí, během které se mu podaří před japonskou brutalitou zachránit stovky tisíc lidí.
