Příběh začíná ve chvíli, kdy se druhorozené lvíče Simby a Naly, Kion, má stát vůdcem Lví hlídky. Od nepaměti se Lví hlídka skládá z těch nejstatečnějších, nejdivočejších, nejrychlejších, nejsilnějších a nejbystřejších lvů, kteří mají za úkol ochraňovat Říši lvů. Kion místo toho, aby svolal takovou skupinu mladých lvů, poruší tradici a vybere si za společníky své přátele, o nichž je přesvědčen, že jsou tou nejlepší volbou. Vybere si Bungu, odvážného medojeda; Fuli, sebevědomou gepardici; Beshteho, lehkovážného a srdečného hrocha a Ona, intelektuální volavku.
