Kdo je chodící smrt? Zombie, kam se podíváš, nebo hrstka vyčerpaných lidí v děsuplném prostředí? Zemi ovládly položivé zrůdy. Boj zbytků lidstva o přežití v postapokalyptickém světě může začít. Živí mrtví zachycují příběh skupinky lidí, kteří přežili virovou epidemii, jež změnila většinu lidstva v agresivní zombie. Pod vedením Ricka, který byl ve starém světě policistou, cestují americkou Georgií a snaží se najít nový bezpečný domov. Čím je situace zoufalejší, tím je jejich vůle přežít silnější. Jsou ochotni udělat téměř cokoli, aby zůstali naživu. Jak dlouho si udrží zbytky lidskosti? Zástupce šerifa Rick Grimes se probere z kómatu v opuštěné poničené nemocnici. Zjistí, že zatímco byl v bezvědomí, svět postihla epidemie viru, jenž své oběti nejen zabíjel, ale po smrti z nich udělal zombie, které teď požírají živé lidi. Jeho žena a syn nejsou k nalezení. Rick se od jiného přeživšího doslechne, že prý federální Centrum pro kontrolu nemocí v Atlantě v Georgii vymezilo bezpečnou zónu, kde by možná mohl rodinu najít. Ozbrojí se a vydá na dlouhou nebezpečnou cestu zničenou krajinou. Na kraji Atlanty se opravdu ukrývá jeho žena Lori se synem Carlem. Navíc je s nimi Rickův policejní parťák a nejlepší kamarád Shane, se kterým se však domnělá vdova Lori mezitím zapletla. Našli tu útočiště ve skupině dalších přeživších. Tvoří ji Dale, který vlastní obytný vůz, jenž se stal centrem komunity, sestry Andrea a Amy, Glenn, který dříve roznášel pizzu a teď ho často posílají na nebezpečné mise, a spousta dalších. S Rickem coby neformálním vůdcem se snaží za každou cenu zůstat naživu, i když je mrtví pronásledují na každém kroku. Dokážou si ale udržet při hledání kousku bezpečí a domova lidskost? Nebo se nakonec sami stanou chodícími stroji na přežití, živými mrtvými? (TV Prima)
